It is 1984, on the rural East Coast (Waihau Bay). Boy is an 11 year old dreamer who loves Michael Jackson and his father, Alamein. Boy imagines his father as a deep sea diver, war hero and a close relative of Michael Jackson. When Alamein return home, after seven years in jail, Boy is forced to confront the man he thought he remembered, find his own potential and learn to get along without the hero he had been hoping for. This giant NZ box office hit is definately recommended.

AVAILABILITY OF COPIES

The New Zealand DVD is presented 1.76:1, enhanced for 16x9, with an English language 5.1 dolby digital surround or optional 2.0 stereo sound. There are optional English subtitles and commentary audio track by the director. The dvd also contains the theatrical trailer.
As of 03 September, 2010, it is available from New Zealand sources, selling for $20nz, for a PAL regions 2/4 DVD. On December 15, a 2-disc set was released selling for about $30nz and this "Collector's Edition" version had an Australian release 13 January 2011, selling for about $35au. The 2-disc version contains the director's short, 'Two Cars, One Night'; a "Behind the Scenes" featurette with commentary track; deleted and extended scenes; 'Crazy Horses' music videos, trailer and an introduction by Taika Waititi.
An ntsc R1 DVD was released 09 July 2013, as well as a region A/B 1080p Blu-ray disc. The DVD sells for about $15us and the Blu-ray for about $20us. Both dvd and blu-ray contain extras of 'Two Cars, One Night', Interviews and B roll, "Kickstarter" videos and the trailer. There are no subtitles nor commentary track with either the R1 DVD nor the Region A Blu-ray offerings.

An All-Regions 1080p 1.78:1/16x9 Blu-ray Collector's Edition, with both DTS HD MA 5.1 & DD 2.0 spoken English options for the feature, plus optional English subtitles and optional descriptive English narration is available from Australian and New Zealand sources. The feature also has an optional commentary track with Taika Waititi. It was released December 2013, selling for about $20nz. Its extras are essentially the same as the DVD "Collector's Edition" as follows: Taika Waititi Introduction(2:23), Behind the Scenes(10:27), Deleted and Extended Scenes(13:28), Outtakes(6:12), 'Two Cars - One Night' short(11:17), Crazy Horse videos(16:06), trailer(2:13). Although the feature is 1080p, all the extras are 576i. This is the disc to get, if you can play blu-ray.
